Around the neighborhood, just north of the train tracks of Mile End in an area called Park Extension, there are old factories turned into living spaces. The roof of this building shows all the old vents and piping that would have fed into some sort of machine shop or manufacturing area. Just off to my left, not seen, is a massive old building that seems to be an old Marconi factory. There is a lot history around, and for the most part the city tries to preserve as much of it as possible while still allowing for growth and new construction.

Right around the bike path, and across from the Canadian tire which you can see in the background on Bellechase street, there is a lumber yard with very unique features. The main structure is pale orange yellow on top and bright yellow on bottom, with red-brown trim. The yellow were based on yellow ochre (PY43) with adjustments. On the bottom layer I added benzi yellow (PY154). The dark green to the right is important, it provides the dark contrast to make the yellows pop.

I was painting here back in August of 2019, there is a lot more graffiti now as you see from today's painting. It looks like Monet was here! To paint this scene I applied a juicy layer of wet yellow and let it run all over the paper, leaving just a few slivers of paper showing through for highlights. As it dried I applied thick brushstrokes of red brick (PR101 + PR179) and carbon black (PBk6). The idea was to create a misty, gritty atmosphere with plenty of light and shadow, just like Monet used to do with his impressionist paintings.
