Rusty Drum Turquoise Roofs

After reeling off a series of chemical drum painting, I took the opportunity to make a larger, more detailed painting on the location, which is the sidewalk/bike path running along side of the busy Notre Dame street east. I liked the variations in beige and turquoise, with the rusted out drum in the foreground. It was a complex scene to paint, and the humidity was keeping everything moist. The beige tones are mixes of umber (PBr7) with the tuquoise mix  (PG7 + PB15). The darker shadow turquoise is PG7 with the dark blue PB60. I add a bit of 'grit' into the mixes to make them earthy, usually just swishing in some grey from the corners of the mixing area, or dabbing in some red ochre works too. The rust effect was done with a dilute yellow ochre (PY43), kept moist, then burnt umber (PBr7) with red ochre (PR101) and some concentrated yellow ochre (PY43) and orange (PO62). A slight violet shadow and black detailing completes the effect. You are really fighting for a painting like this, its hot, humid, and the noise from the highway, even with earplugs is shaking your bones. But all of that contributes to the vibe of the painting. And if you look carefully, my signature orange pylon is hiding in the background!
