Gas Station at Dusk

Just before the sun is completely down the sky becomes a middle grey, and the artificial lights start to become prominent. To capture this effect, the white paper has to be the lightest value in the whole painting, meaning that all of the other components must be grey or darker. While painting a scene like this, most of the paper is still white, so the full effect can not be seen until the painting is complete. This gas station is on st Jacques street near the Canadian Tire, which is in the background although not discernible, I was standing in the Reno Depot parking lot. It is a really neat scene and I may go back some time with a larger piece of paper.
