Demo Dépanneur, Freezing Day
Here is the Dépanneur, slated for demolition, in all its winter glory. The plan was to show up with a larger piece of paper on a wonderful, sunny day and get all the details right. Well, most of the plan worked except for the wonderful weather part! It was indeed sunny, but a blistering cold wind was coming down Côte st Luc, causing the water to get a bit slushy, and even one of the blobs of paint on my palette cracked and fell out. Hanging in there, I managed to complete the painting to my satisfaction, incorporating all the things I learned from painting it a few times before such as the turquoise brick with yellow-grey grouting, the pale ochre bricks on top, the rusted remnants of the sign above, the yellow spray paint, blue Pepsi logos, the slushy dog, cars reflected on window, heaps of snow, my initials in graffiti, all the weird angles, and finally I got the door handle to show up. I liked the compositional element of having snow going straight across the front, signifying that nobody has walked into this store for a long time. For the demo mall art project, there are still a few scenes including the laundry mat, and the store next to it. Then of course, when it gets demolished finally, I can paint a picture of the hole! I wanted to get the main paintings done since it may be surrounded by construction fences in the Spring. Then again, it could just sit there like it is for another year. Who knows, but I was glad to get this painting done today despite the cold, then go home to a hot cup of tea and some hot Pão de Queijo (pronounced pon-J-K-zo....Brazilian cheese ball bread)
