Subject Matters
Choosing the right subject matters. There is no one rule for choosing a scene, usually for me it is a combination of inspiration and opportunity. Today's painting was more opportunity, I got out in the afternoon with a 40% chance of rain and decided to stay close to home, in fact, our condo is in the background. In the foreground is a perspective drawing of the drug store, sidewalk and road. Most pieces of artwork contain some form of people, whether it be figures or portrait. The viewers of a piece of artwork will feel an immediate connection to images of people (or cute animals), there are plenty of examples of famous painting with people in them. It is also possible to convey emotion in a landscape, albeit in an abstract way. Today's painting might convey a sense of daily routine, or impending rain, or emptiness. To me, the brick wall in the foreground was the inspiration, I wanted to see if I could use burnt yellow ochre (a maroon earth, PR102) without mixing it with any other colours. Sure enough it turned out great! Next time I just need to get the pedestrians and their pets into the painting.
