Jazz Fest Night Scenes

Late last night I rode my bike/studio down to the International Jazz Festival at Place des Arts and found some somewhat secluded spots to make some paintings. This scene is the main blues stage, the band was belting out some great tunes to paint by. The stage lighting was changing between white, blue and red. I had a small headlamp set up in my bike bag so I could check the colours which are difficult to judge at night.

This is a frontal view of the stage which was lit up red with smoke effects. In the background were the tall sky-scraper apartments with windows illuminated against a dark cloudy sky. The skies were done with variations of indo blue (PB60) and pyrol orange (PO73). The stage lighting was pyrol red (PR252) with pyrol orange. The crowd was painted with a few brief squiggles and brush strokes. The dark black/brown of the building was burnt sienna deep (PR101) with indo blue and a touch of carbon black (PBk6).

As the show ended I made one last painting of the striking TD building illuminated green (PG36), and the Jazz Fest building illuminated yellow and orange. The traffic light had been red which contrasted the green neatly. The sky was darker here, so I added some perylene green (PBk31) to the indo blue pyrol ornage mix. This combo gives a lot of flexibility to capture the inky dark purple of a night sky. The moon was just a sliver and was already set by now so it was a dark sky against the bright buildings.

  1. After two years of restrictions due to the pandemic, certainly who was at the Jazz Festival enjoyed great music, while you the vibe and your brush.
