Acadie Station, Blue Line Metro

Acadie Station is one of the, most interesting, stations on the metro line. Two castle-like structures flank the busy Acadie street. Its main purpose seems to be a connection with the University of Montreal campus across the street. I appreciated the nature surrounding the station. Pale blue-green pines adorned the building. With the bitter cold this painting was a challenge indeed. Luckily there was still an iota of sun before noon and I got the painting completed.

This is an overhead view, from the vantage point of a colossus concrete overpass they built to connect to the campus. Inexplicably, they included a huge viewing platform complete with plexiglass walls, just so you can get an unobstructed view of Acadie street and its metro stations. The painting shows the west side entrance. I included a few people for perspective.

This was not quite a 'plein air' painting. My hands were cold, and the previous painting was not drying very fast so I walked my bike into the station and found a good place to sit. Interior scenes are difficult, they always turn out looking washed-out. To improve the results, I enhanced the contrast as I painted, for example, the light on top has a full range of light and dark, and the shadow on the concrete moved about 5 value steps. I bundled up and got back on the bike outside and headed home just as the light snow was beginning.
