Downtown Tree

After doing some errands downtown I stopped to make this painting on Rue Saint-Marc, the tree was occupying an impressive amount of space, stretching over and across the road seemingly touching the apartment buildings. In the distance, sandwiched between buildings is Mount Royal. Standing in shadow with the cold temperatures this painting stayed stubbornly moist the whole time. I almost packed it up but decided to wait ten minutes for it to dry, during which the sun came out and illuminated the buildings with an amber glow. Since the paint was moist I could drop in some isoindo yellow (PY110) to give that sunset highlight on the tall apartment buildings. I edited out dozens of cars that were parked on both sides of the street and driving on the road. My main focus on the urban paintings is to capture nature and how it interacts with the human-made structures. One other colour note, the concrete of the apartment on the right was raw umber (PBr7) with perylene green (PBk31) with a touch of yellow ochre- it gave that aged concrete colour that is common in Montreal.
