World Inspired Landscapes: Norway

Norway is a Scandinavian country that also has an indigenous population of people living in the far north. The scandi contingent probably originated from vikings, although there were successions of kingdoms and population shifts over the centuries. World War II saw a lot of fighting in the country, but since then they have rebounded and developed their natural resources such as rich oil fields that are quite lucrative. Studying the geography of Norway revealed a kaleidoscope of shapes, colours and textures. In some of the more rugged scenes you could hardly tell what you were looking at, mountains, islands, valleys, rivers, the sea. To represent these variations, the composition is essentially a collection of abstract shapes surrounded by a turquoise sea done with phthalo turquoise (PB17). It also reminded me of rune stones, which are viking alphabet letters carved usually onto wood or rock. The rune stones can be cast, and a fortune told kind of like tarot. I tried to learn rune stones a while back and enjoyed the whole premise. Who knows, maybe my Saxon ancestors came from Norway, although most sources say that Saxons came from the north coast of Europe on a land bridge that is long since under water.
