Collingwood, rural Ontario

 

Collingwood is a small town in Simcoe country not too far from Bolton by car. I used to drive around on the weekends and visit areas that were too far to get to easily by bike such as Creemore Ontario, Guelph, and of course Toronto. I have quite a few more from these areas especially Guelph. The Collingwood painting is a little tilted, I avoided making outlines at this stage of my career, but it made it hard to keep things straight, and to get in those details like the sailboat. The reflection is cool. The shadow was probably done with cerulean blue (PB35), rose madder genuine (PR83), and some aureolin yellow (PY40) to get that shadow grey. I don't use any of those colours anymore, and they are hard to replicate with other colours. 5 x 8" cold press watercolour, 1996

 

Having gone for many bike rides I captured rural Ontario, focusing on things that would not be around for too long. I called them 'Vanishing Landscape' paintings. In fact, this building would stay up for a very long time, last time I saw the location it was still there. I am not entirely sure where this was, somewhere west of Bolton maybe King St. or Castlederg road.  5 x 7"cold press watercolour, 1996

 

This one could be almost anywhere in rural Ontario but I seem to remember either 8^th line or 9^th line, now known as Mt. Hope and Mt. Pleasant roads. It was later than the earliest landscapes done in 1997 because of the size and techniques. 6 x 9"cold press watercolour, 2001
