Lab Book #22: I am Utamaro

I was very surprised to discover that green plus purple equals blue. I mixed phthalo green (PG7) and quinacridone violet (PV19) and out comes a dark rich blue that resembles the classic indigo blue. Just below the central pillar in this painting, those fish scale things are the blue, and I used it throughout to create a range of half tones and washes. It can be adjusted into turquoise or a lilac shade easily by varying the proportions. The other colour used was benzimida yellow (PY154), which makes an earthy orange with the quin violet as seen in the fossil bed top left and the car. I added some orange and red paint here and there to create pops of colour like in the kimono and parts of the car. Utamaro was a famous Japanese artist who specialized in drawing famous actors and kimono ladies. I was reading a book of his work and made these doodles originally in my lab book, and then copied my doodles into the painting.12 x 22" cold press B side. Watercolour, August 2020
