Giant Pine Tree, Cowansville day 3

Great pine trees lined the Manor Sweetsburg B&B, their bark was a rose earth colour, their pine needles all manner of greens. I set up my chair about a meter from the trunk and looked up frequently to make this painting. The sun was going down creating all kinds of light and shadows. I had painted three pine trees a few days earlier and pondered the best way to get the colour of the bark right. It occurred to me that I needed 'concrete rose' a mix I discovered while painting Monk Metro, it consists of rose red/magenta (PV19 in this case) with some carbon black and touches of umber, then a good amount of water. I made the yellows really bright in order to convey the sunlight, in fact, it was more of a soft velvety yellow with plenty of cool blue/green. 6.15 x 7.5 " cold press, watercolour, August 2020
