Vincent Study 5

 


Vincent Van Gogh was a serious artist, he tried to emulate the famous artists and style of his time. In doing so, he fused together Dutch landscape, French Impressionism, and Japanese prints into something totally new. When we went to the museum in Amsterdam I was so impressed by the liveliness of the paintings and how much character was seen in the elements. Looking at the work on a screen or in a book doesn't carry the same weight. In the time after this visit I embarked on a series of abstract paintings inspired by his style- colourful, strong lines, and full of energy. In this version there are some cypress trees on the top right, and directional lines shape the grass and landscape. 6 x 8" hot press, watercolour, 2018

On the back of each Vincent Study I painted another abstract. I believe they were painted over the course of fall/winter 2018 - early 2019. Here is the B side, it is called "Cactopus" :
