Campus Quad Sitting Steps

Using the experimental 'black and blue' palette I made this quick painting of the campus quad sitting steps. They are an extensive concrete set of steps that you can sit on and chat or eat lunch, or make paintings. This is just the side view of it, I was actually more interested in painting the young birch tree. Painting in mostly black, grey and white is very challenging, without the colour crutch to lean on I had to really focus on telling the story with details and value contrasts. Ironically, the weather has been very gray and overcast since I started the black and blue project, the purpose of keeping blue in the mix was to paint nice blue skies. The blue that you see in this painting was even an embellishment, the sky actually had no blue in it due to heavy cloud cover.
