Words Belong Here: Lab Book #25

With the recent bout of cold and windy weather I decided to embark an indoor lab book series painting, this time from the notes in lab book #25. The book is still active, so I had to 'borrow' it from my office in order to make this painting. On my art table (dining room table), I prop up the lab book with a book stand, then copy each doodle using watercolour paint and a number 2 synthetic brush. Paints used included Roman black (PBk11), grey ochre (natural), lemon yellow ochre (PY43), mars orange (PY42), all from Stoneground paint, and the blue was lapis lazuli (natural) from Schmincke. Most of the outline was roman black, which is actually a very dark brown, then I switched to using grey ochre and lapis lazuli on the rightmost segment. The colouring was sparse, just enough to give some pop without overwhelming the drawing elements too much.

In 2004 I brought one of the first lab book paintings, Finding Space, to an art-in-the-park show in London Ontario. Another artist took a look and told me that customers prefer things that they can recognize. Based on that advice, the subsequent lab book paintings were an attempt to find Form rather than Space. In recent times I went back to the original idea of Finding Space, with Lab book #24 and the most recent installment #25.

Note: I will get a better picture when the sun is shining, this one was just done with my studio light and cellphone camera. Here are some crops:
