On my way back from the dentist I took a detour through Mount Royal and found a nice view to paint. The wind was coming up and over the slope here creating a wicked windchill. Luckily I had my moose hide gloves on today and they kept my hands warm although my face was a little numb. The paint was actually freezing up despite having salt in the water it must have been the wind chill effect. In the distance were mountains, probably Jay peak or Mansfield in the USA, or Sutton but I think this was a looking a little too far west for that mountain, and Sutton's mountain is not very big. Jay peak is about 5 miles south of the border, and the mountain is about 3,400 feet (~1,000 meters) which seems like it would be visible on a clear day. This kind of painting could hardly be better- even if I took a photo, went home, made a cup of coffee, and spent the afternoon painting in the comfort of my home, it would not convey the feel of sheer wind and frigid temperatures the way that this location picture coveys those feelings. Having said that, it would be great to go back to this location in the summer and see if I can catch a view through the trees on a warmer day.
