Down by the canal in old port, there is an industrial area where they used to make flour by importing wheat and processing it there, and to store the flour in vast quantities. The buildings are huge, 10 or 20 stories high, and they have been steadily deteriorating over the years as you can see from the painting. There was a plan to demolish it all for safety and perhaps a park (or more condos!?), but people protested since it adds character and history to the area. It would be a big expensive project, one day I believe all these old buildings will be razed and replaced. There is already a park and bike trails that go around it. All the rust and texture was applied after establishing the various shades of grey underneath, which ranged from neutral turquoise to bluish greys. I outlined the windows pretty carefully too, just to give a good structural feeling underneath all the rust and the trees that seem to be clamoring for the buildings removal. Trees: we're coming for you!
