Space Tree

Abstract paintings present a different type of challenge as compared to landscape painting where the object is to replicate a version of reality. In abstract, you have unlimited freedom of choice related to design, colour, line, value, lighting, in fact everything is up to your imagination. Without reality to guide your brush it can lead to wild and sometimes disappointing results. It is cooking without a recipe! For years I have honed my creative drawing ability through ceaseless doodling, and for awhile now I have been converting the doodles into paintings. I think this one was done free form, that is without doodles. The branches of the tree seem to have no end, and the swirling water(?) brings the middle ground to the foreground with lots of energy. 5.5 x 7.5" cold press, watercolour, 2019
